In the period from 250 to 750 AD. e. Calakmul was the center of the so-called "Kingdom of the Serpent's Head" which included various cities throughout the Mayan lowlands: Peru, Dos Pilas and Naranjo, as well as Caracol, which in the 500s became Calakmul's main ally in constant clashes with its rival: Great Tikal.
